AgFunder Half Year Report: Time for NZ AgTech to break the glass ceiling?

On Friday, AgFunder released its 2016 mid-year investment report. It coincided with an insightful summary, on AgFunderNews, of the first Sprout AgTech Accelerator program and its outcomes. Hat doffed to James and the team at BCC for the program’s successful first year focus on positive deliverables, as opposed to simple funding outcomes. This should be the measure of success for [...]

Telling New Zealand’s AgTech Story to the World

One of my six key takeaways from the recent Kiwi AgTech sector tour of Silicon Valley was that whilst our innovation and technology competes with the world’s best, we are not great at promoting ourselves offshore. I guess that distance, together with our natural modesty, both play their part. This has been reinforced with discussions I have had with a [...]

The Kiwi AgTech delegation has landed. Let the Program begin

The 30 Kiwi AgTech companies taking part in this week’s Silicon Valley AgTech program have landed. Today, the 3-day AgTech Immersion Program begins. It’s the culmination of several months of planning and I think it’s fair to say that we have nailed it. Last night,  the Kiwi AgTech delegation met up for a pre-Program meet-up in SF The [...]

UPDATE: 23 April 2016: As of today, 29 New Zealand AgTech companies had signed up to join the Silicon Valley AgTech Immersion Program and SVForum Conference next month. Is this the largest ever Kiwi tech business delegation visiting an offshore tech event? I think it might be. Last Thursday, I had the opportunity to listen to a number of early [...]

The AgTech Investment Report 2015: New Zealand Missing In Action

Yesterday, I read AgFunder’s just released AgTech Investing Report: Year in Review 2015. It made both positive and depressing reading at the same time. Let’s focus first of all on the positive. The year saw 499 companies attract US $4.6 billion of investment across 526 rounds of financing, far surpassing initial expectations for the year, and nearly doubling 2014 figures [...]

Leveraging our key Valley networks and Asia

In my blog post last week, ‘What will Wharf42 be doing in 2016?’, I talked a little bit about what I believe will be our key focus areas of activity for the next twelve months. One very specific area I mentioned was our engagement with potential partners in Asia. For an entity best known for its Silicon Valley roots, that [...]

Wharf42 Comment: Sand Hill Bets on Precision Agriculture Event

Last night, Jacqui and I joined several hundred AgTech entrepreneurs and investors at VLab’s AgTech Silicon Valley gig: Sand Hill Bets on Precision Agriculture. The event took place inside the Knight Management Center at Stanford University. Much of the background to the event can be found on previous posts to this site. To re-cap however. Agriculture is now one of [...]
