Introducing WNT Ventures

In July 2014, NZ Government Minister Stephen Joyce announced that WNT Ventures had been accredited by Callaghan Innovation as one of three new tech-focused incubators in New Zealand.

Wharf42 is proud to be a co-founder of WNT. We partnered with two other innovation hubs in the Bay of Plenty to create WNT: Newnham Park and TiDA. Each hub offered a different specialist tech focus: Wharf42 (ICT), Newnham Park (Robotics & AgTech) and TiDA (High Value Manufacturing). This unique collaboration extended beyond tech. The initiative attracted the support of both Enterprise Angels & Quayside Holdings, two key investment partners within the Bay of Plenty. Additional investors joined WNT Ventures Fund 1; Priority One and Wellington-based AngelHQ.

As of October 2017, WNT Ventures Fund 1 had invested into 7 exciting early stage New Zealand technology companies with rich IP.

What We Do

WNT Ventures is a technology incubator that invests into IP-rich technologies out of Universities, CRI’s and the private sector. We provide capital, support and experience at an early stage in the development of the technology to fast-track successful outcomes.
As a general rule, WNT invests at a post-research, pre angel/VC stage with occasional overlaps on either side. We term this stage as investing “where Angels fear to tread” but more formally we provide a pre-Seed or Seed investment into typically pre-revenue technologies.
We look for global opportunities where we can add real value, not only from our capital but through our strong local and international networks, and alongside our commercial backgrounds and expertise. WNT is a fund consisting of a strong group of investors and staff who have a background of successfully building companies and we seek to further attract talented individuals who we can develop into CEO’s for the companies we form.
We provide patient capital, leveraging access to the Callaghan Repayable Loan scheme, and recognise the need to accelerate the development of these early stage and high risk technologies into companies of substance. This process aims to recycle both the capabilities developed, and the capital, back into building more New Zealand IP-rich successful technologies.
WNT Ventures is based at Basestation, 148 Durham Street, Tauranga 3110, Bay of Plenty.
