WNT Ventures is looking for an energetic professional with a strong science or engineering background who can build long term relationships with New Zealand Universities, Crown Research Institutes and other research organizations and identify and evaluate IP and novel technologies with commercial potential.

WNT Ventures is one three new technology-focused incubators for high growth early stage firms that will be able to access new Callaghan Innovation repayable grants on behalf of companies they incubate.  WNT Ventures will establish and nurture businesses based on intellectual property and novel technologies primarily sourced from New Zealand universities and Crown Research Institutes.  During our first three years of operation our goal is to build a portfolio of 12 successful technology based start-ups that attract Angel or Venture Capital investors and for the incubator itself to become a high value business.  Based in Tauranga, WNT Ventures is privately owned by business leaders with a passion for developing new businesses and new technologies.

WNT Ventures operates on lean business management principles with an active Board and Investment Committee, a small team of staff, and contracted business partners.   The Technology Business Development Manager responsibilities are:

  • Sourcing a pipeline of IP and novel technologies with potential incubation and investment

  • Developing and managing relationship with external stakeholders, including New Zealand Crown Research Institutes and Universities

  • Conducting initial evaluation and technical due diligence assessments, liaising with external technical experts as required

  • Preparing and presenting initial assessment reports and pre-incubation proposals and plans for investment consideration

  • Supporting and mentoring start-up companies during incubation

  • Other activities to contribute to a successful incubator and a lively working environment

 This role is perfect for an individual with the following attributes:

  • A tertiary qualification in Science or Engineering

  • Established networks within New Zealand Universities, Crown Research Institutes and other research organizations

  • Experience working with and quickly understanding complex technical information

  • Experience sourcing and evaluating commercial opportunities with a technology focus

  • Experience managing IP protection and executing technology transfers and license agreements with research organizations

  • Interest and experience in technology rich companies and the commercialization of new technologies

  • An understanding of new ventures and their challenges and requirements in the initial stages

  • Ability to develop positive working relationships with a diverse range of business, research and government stakeholders

  • Demonstrated ability working in multi-skilled teams to deliver successful business outcomes

  • Successfully achieved positive outcomes between academic, technical and commercial people

  • Highly effective concise written and verbal communication skills

  • Resilient with a positive attitude.  Can influence and negotiate successful outcomes when faced with differing and opposing views

  • Able to manage a high and demanding workload. Can manage complexity and deal with competing priorities and details.

The position will be based in Tauranga and will report to the WNT Ventures Management Limited Chief Executive.  A market related performance based remuneration package will be negotiated with the successful candidate.
