It’s great news that WNT Ventures is offering a special prize for this year’s University of Canterbury Research Tech Jumpstart competition. It’s part of WNT Venture’s strategy of building greater engagement with New Zealand’s fantastic University and Crown Research Institutes research teams.

WNT Ventures – Commercialising complex IP from New Zealand’s Universities & Crown Research Institutes

The WNT Prize will be for the project that shows the most commercial promise. Alongside the cash prize, WNT Ventures will provide incubation services including:

  • Strategic Planning
  • Company Structuring
  • Market Validation
  • Capital Raising
  • Financial analysis
  • Mentorship
  • IP Protection and Strategy
  • Access to networks

These services would be in relation to the use of the prize funding and will assist in the development of the technology towards a commercial outcome. The winners could potentially go on to receive further investment capital from WNT Ventures, up to around $600,000, and involvement with WNT’s Technology Incubator programme.

As well as the existing criteria for Tech Jumpstart, WNT Ventures will be looking for:

  • Novel ideas with strong IP that have potential global market applications
  • Great people

There are some criteria that WNT require relating to the provision of these funds. The team members from the winning project will need to sign an agreement with WNT Ventures. You could even meet the peeps from Wharf42. Yeah!

WNT Ventures CEO Carl Jones will sit on the Tech Jumpstart judging panel, and award the WNT prize at the awards event on Wednesday 24 August.

This is a great initiative from the team at WNT Ventures. It maps our ambition to help commercialise some of the great, and very often, complex IP emerging from our Universities and CRIs. Wharf42 looks forward to the outcome of the 24th August announcement with real anticipation.
