The 2035 Oceania Summit delayed to 10-11 October 2022

The 2035 Oceania Summit delayed to 10-11 October 2022

Given the New Zealand government’s recent announcements around border settings for 2022, we have taken the tough decision to delay the 2035 Oceania Summit to 10-11 October 2022.

Given the large number of international delegates expected to attend the Summit, the restrictions announced, including the need to ‘self-isolate’ for one week, made the decision inevitable. We are delighted that we have managed to retain the use of Auckland’s Aotea Centre and are grateful for the understanding from our sponsors and Summit suppliers.

There are some silver linings in the decision. The delay will provide the opportunity to accelerate the development of a number of planned pre-Summit initiatives, including a new Summit roadshow in Australia. Details of this will be announced in late January.

We will continue to publish full details of your opportunity to actively engage and participate in the Summit at www.2035.ag

Introducing the 2035 Vision Investment  Investment Pitch event

The 2035 Vision platform has been established to support New Zealand, Australian and Pacific Island AgriFoodTech and ClimateTech start-ups accelerate and scale their solutions to enable farmers and growers reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, as well as develop more resilient growing systems to mitigate the impact of our changing climate.

Whilst time is short, the region’s start-up community has the ambition and the innovative mindset to meet the challenge. To support and accelerate that ambition, 2035 Vision is launching a major new Investment Programme that will kick off with a Start-up Investment Pitch event. We believe the region’s start-up community holds the key to delivering real change. Whilst our scientific community and major agribusinesses are working hard to develop new technologies to reduce emissions, history has shown that it is the start-up entrepreneur that will often deliver the most disruptive and impactful solution.

Are you one of Oceania’s key disruptive start-up businesses developing solutions to meet the challenge?

You are ambitious. You have an experienced team. Your product and service has a strong market fit. You are ready to scale. You are not just looking for dollars. You are looking for connected capital and the global networks that will accelerate your growth.

Are you ready to step up and make a difference? The time is now.

The 2035 Oceania Summit Advisory Committee met today

The 2035 Oceania Summit Advisory Committee met today

I was delighted to host the first meeting of the 2035 Oceania Summit Advisory Committee this morning. Despite New Zealand going into COVID-19 lockdown Level 4 overnight, it was an honour to be joined by such a committed group of globally-recognised AgriFoodTech and Climate Change experts. You can learn more about the team at www.2035.ag

The main purpose of the meeting was to discuss the developing Summit programme. The Advisory Committee represent a diverse range of stakeholders and that was reflected in this morning’s meeting. I believe the lessons and conversations that emerge from the Summit will have a lasting impact on how the world looks at agrifood technology and its ability to help address climate change.

Over the past few months, we have been working with both Auckland Unlimited and the Business Events team at Tourism New Zealand to deliver a fantastic experience for delegates. Over the coming weeks, I expect to be able to announce several additional partnerships which will help take the event to the next level.

The Advisory Committee will be meeting again next month as the Summit programme builds. If you want to keep up to speed with developments, please sign up to the Summit newsletter. You can find that on the Summit landing page here.

Climate change: IPCC report is ‘code red for humanity’

Climate change: IPCC report is ‘code red for humanity’

Today’s UN IPCC Climate Change report sets out a stark message on the state of the climate crisis. If we do not accelerate our efforts to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions in the near term, the consequences for future generations look dire. The sober assessment of our planet’s future has been delivered by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a group of scientists whose findings are endorsed by the world’s governments.

When Jacqui and I decided last year to focus all our efforts on promoting agrifood technology’s ability to help farmers and growers reduce their greenhouse gas emissions as well as design new and more sustainable growing systems, we did so against the growing, indisputable evidence of climate change. Increased extreme weather events continue to impact geographic regions and peoples across the world. Without urgent action, they are simply a foretaste of what is to come.

Next April, we will be hosting the 2035 Oceania Summit in Auckland. The Summit has been designed to enable the region’s scientific & research community, its industry leaders, agribusiness & agritech companies, farmers & growers, regulators and policy makers to meet and discuss how agrifood tech innovation and on-farm application can help address the existential threat posed by climate change.

Over the coming days, we will be announcing a number of Summit partnerships and associated initiatives that we will be running in preparation for the Summit.

MEDIA RELEASE: New Zealand expertise serves up new agri-food-tech event

MEDIA RELEASE: New Zealand expertise serves up new agri-food-tech event

This media release is reproduced with the kind permission of Tourism New Zealand

New Zealand is embracing its role as a world leader in agri-food-tech with the launch of a new event, the 2035 Oceania Summit in Auckland.

The regional follow-up summit will draw on the experience of New Zealand-based global agri-food-tech consultancy Wharf42, which will co-host the AgriFoodTech Climate Summit at COP26 in Glasgow in November.

Wharf42 founder and Summit organiser Peter Wren-Hilton says: “New Zealand is seen as a key global agri-food-tech hub. One of the reasons we’ve been contracted to help other nations in this area is because the New Zealand model is seen as being the gold standard.

“New Zealand is so strong in agrifood because our agriculture and horticulture sector is the backbone of our economy. In addition, the government in New Zealand is very committed to effecting resolution in climate change. The combination of these factors makes New Zealand the perfect destination for an event of this sort.

“There is great science being done by our universities and Crown Research Institutes. The objective is to provide farmers and growers with the tools they need to clean up the environment, address climate issues and reach net zero emissions targets.

“By bringing together the region’s scientific and research community, agritech companies, farmers and growers, investors and policymakers, the 2035 Oceania Summit has been designed to showcase local solutions for global climate impact.”

The 2035 Oceania Summit event was launched during Fieldays 2021 in New Zealand, the Southern Hemisphere’s largest agricultural event.

Within 48 hours of the announcement, more than 250 people had registered their interest on the Summit’s landing page, a very positive indicator, Wren-Hilton says.

The event has the support of Tourism New Zealand’s Business Events team, Auckland Unlimited, AgriTech New Zealand, and the Australian AgriTech Association. Wren-Hilton is currently undertaking a roadshow around New Zealand to secure the involvement of other key players in the agrifood ecosystem.

Tourism New Zealand General Manager Domestic & Business Events, Bjoern Spreitzer says: “Hosting this event not only positions New Zealand as a global leader in agritech and agrifood expertise; it opens opportunities for further research and investment that will benefit our local farmers, local economy, and local environment in the longer term.”

The two-day Oceania Summit, which will take place in Auckland in April 2022 will feature regional and international keynote speakers, breakout panels, an exhibition showcasing current research being undertaken across the region, a startup hub with a pitch event to global investors, as well as extensive networking opportunities.

He says: “If the borders are open, we’re hoping to attract delegates from around the world to come and share what is happening in this important space.”
